Rear gardens in Rugby are frequently on a slope, and the level is what decides whether a garden costs what people expect. A patio that needs one step costs one thing; the same patio on a garden that falls a metre from the house to the boundary is a retaining structure with a patio on top.
The terraces near the centre tend to be long and narrow with a fall away from the house. The post-war housing at Bilton and Hillmorton has wider, shallower plots where levels are usually kinder but access is often better too.
We set out levels and drainage before anything is laid, because water that has nowhere to go is the most common reason a garden fails. What we build is on our landscaping page.
Four things we commit to on every job, rather than four things we say about ourselves.
We see Building Control through to sign off
Permitted development is not an exemption from Building Regulations. We arrange the Rugby Borough Council inspections, meet the inspector on site at each stage and see the work through to sign off. We do not make the application itself, and we will tell you what is needed and when.
A price in writing before anything starts
Free, and you get it before you commit to us. Party walls and skip licences are raised at quotation stage, not three weeks into the dig.
One team from first dig to final snag
The same people do the groundworks, the brickwork and the fit out. Nobody hands your job to a subcontractor you have never met.
We will tell you if a job is not right for us
You get a straight answer rather than a padded price. It costs us a job occasionally and saves you a great deal more.
How we approach the work
Process, specification and what moves the price are set out on our landscaping page.
Planning, regulations and practicalities
The answers that genuinely differ from one Rugby street to the next.
Do I need planning permission, and who handles Building Regulations?
Most garden work does not need planning permission, but there are real exceptions and they catch people out: height limits on walls and fences, particularly next to a highway, and decking or raised platforms above a certain height.
Paving a front garden also engages surface water drainage rules, which is a genuine consideration on the Rugby streets where front gardens have already been given over to parking.
Where does the skip go, and who applies for the licence?
Landscaping moves more material in and out of a rear garden than almost anything else, so access is the first thing we price.
Where there is a side gate wide enough for a machine, a garden that would take a fortnight by hand takes days. Where the only route is through the house, as it is on many of the terraces near the centre, everything moves by barrow through a boarded and sheeted hallway, and both the programme and the price reflect that.
We look at the route on the survey visit and tell you which of the two jobs yours is before we quote.
