Landscaping in Burbage

Landscaping in Burbage, priced in writing before anything starts.

Landscaping in Burbage, done properly

Landscaping in the old part of Burbage is defined by a single problem: there is no way into the back garden except through the house.

With continuous terracing built onto the footpath, there is no side gate, no driveway and frequently no rear entry either. Every slab, every bulk bag and every barrow of spoil is carried through the hall, and it goes out the same way. That is not a reason to accept a poor garden, and we build good ones on exactly these plots, but it is the reason a Burbage core garden costs more than the same garden three streets away on an estate plot. Anyone quoting both at the same rate has not walked the job.

The practical answer is planning rather than muscle. We size deliveries to what can be moved through a house in a day, we protect the route properly instead of laying a dust sheet, and we sequence the work so the ground floor is not impassable for a fortnight.

Beyond access, the usual rules apply. Every tree in a conservation area is protected whether or not an order exists, which means six weeks written notice to the borough before even a heavy prune. Levels and retaining structures are designed and drained rather than stacked. And any hard surfacing at the front, on the rare plot that has a front to surface, falls under the five square metre rule.

Our landscaping page shows the range of the work.

Why choose Southfield Construction

Four things we commit to on every job, rather than four things we say about ourselves.

We see Building Control through to sign off

Permitted development is not an exemption from Building Regulations. We arrange the Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council inspections, meet the inspector on site at each stage and see the work through to sign off. We do not make the application itself, and we will tell you what is needed and when.

A price in writing before anything starts

Free, and you get it before you commit to us. Party walls and skip licences are raised at quotation stage, not three weeks into the dig.

One team from first dig to final snag

The same people do the groundworks, the brickwork and the fit out. Nobody hands your job to a subcontractor you have never met.

We will tell you if a job is not right for us

You get a straight answer rather than a padded price. It costs us a job occasionally and saves you a great deal more.

How we approach the work

Process, specification and what moves the price are set out on our landscaping page.

Planning, regulations and practicalities

The answers that genuinely differ from one Burbage street to the next.

Where does the skip go, and who applies for the licence?

Where the only route is through the building, we will tell you honestly at the quotation how many days of that you are in for. It is the part of a village garden job people underestimate, and it is better understood before the work than resented during it.

Bulk deliveries onto a narrow village street need the pavement kept clear and the road kept passable, so we take smaller loads more often rather than one lorry that blocks the street for an afternoon.

Garden boundary walls between these terraces are frequently old, shared and built on almost no foundation. Before anything is fixed to one, leaned against one or dug alongside one, we establish whose it is and what it is standing on.
