Hinckley gardens divide along the same line as the houses. On the later estate housing out towards Hollycroft, Sketchley and Burbage there is room to work, side access and a plot with a shape you can design into. On the Victorian streets near the centre the garden is narrow, walled both sides, and reachable only through the house.
That second case decides the price. Every tonne of aggregate and every slab is carried rather than barrowed round the side, and a garden that would take four days on an estate house takes considerably longer. We would rather explain that with the quotation than have it appear later as a variation.
On front gardens there is a national rule that catches people constantly. More than five square metres of hard surfacing to the front of a house needs either a permeable material or a way of draining the run off to a soft area inside your own boundary. Do neither and it needs planning permission. In a conservation area there may be further control on top, including on the boundary wall itself, which on the Victorian streets is often part of what the designation is protecting.
Retaining walls are structure rather than decoration. Anything holding back a real change in level gets designed and drained, not stacked. Our landscaping page shows the range of the work.
